Hillside Elementary's 18th Annual Science Day!
When: October 10th, 2025. All day!
What: Science Day is an all day experience for every student at Hillside! Each homeroom teacher is given an experiment for their grade level and students rotate from class to class within their grade. Teachers also perform brief WOW experiments for the students. The day ends with a science assembly.
What's New This Year: We have several new and exciting things happening this year!
Innovation Academy: Innovation Academy, a Fulton County Schools STEM charter school, is sending an outreach team of students to perform an experiment in each grade! They will create a fourth rotation for each grade so students will get more science! In addition, they are providing mini assemblies for PreK and Kindergarten classes at the end of the day.
Ken Scott: Atlanta based magician Ken Scott is bringing his science magic show to Hillside for assemblies in 1st-5th grade.
We Need You: Science Day is a BIG deal and takes a lot of volunteers! Below are volunteer opportunities, you do not need to dedicate the whole day! In addition, lunch is provided for all volunteers. Sign Up Here!
Experiment Volunteer: Each grade needs 3 volunteers to assist a teacher in performing their experiment. Most experiments run from 8-11 am. We cannot guarantee that volunteers will be with their child's teacher but all classes within a grade will visit each classroom so volunteers will get to see their Husky! See the signup for exact times for each grade.
Hospitality: We provide lunch for all teachers, staff, and volunteers. The Science Day committee will handle planning and delivering lunch but will need volunteers to help set up, maintain, and clean up. Lunch is served in the Media Center. Hospitality is split into two shifts, set up and clean up. See the signup for times!
Floater: Do you want to help but can't commit to the available time slots? Don't worry, we have a place for you! Signup as a floater and email mollynaugher@yahoo.com with your time availability and student's teacher.
Experiments: Each grade will take part in at least four science experiments throughout the day. Most experiments happen in the classrooms but 4th and 5th graders have special experiences as well. See below for a full list of experiments.
4th Grade: Water Bottle Rockets! In one of their rotations, 4th graders will construct water bottle rockets in groups. Around noon we will head to the blacktop to launch them using an air compressor and a water bottle rocket launcher!
5th Grade: Egg Drop! In one of their rotations, 5th graders in groups will use provided materials to create an apparatus to keep an egg safe when dropped from varying heights. At 12:30 they will bring their experiments to the bus lanes where the Roswell Fire Department will meet them with the bucket truck. All of the egg containers will be dropped from 25 feet. Eggs that survive will be dropped from 50 feet, and eggs that survive that will be dropped from 100 feet!

FAQ
- This sounds great, how can I help? See volunteer section above or visit this Sign Up.
- I'm not a scientist, will I be helpful? You sure will! No experience required! You will receive your experiment in email before Science Day so you will know what's coming but the teacher will run the experiment, you will be their assistant!
- I really want to be there but I'm only available for 30 minutes. That's fine! Any time is helpful! Sign Up here as a floater and email mollynaugher@yahoo.com with your availability and student's teacher!
- I'm not available on Science Day, is there anything I can do to help? We are not asking for donations this year. Look for info about Artist Day in early 2026, another great opportunity to get involved!
